Chitika: iOS 7.1 already at six percent adoption after first day

updated 06:11 pm EDT, Tue March 11, 2014

Rapid take-up rate matches that of 7.0.6 security fix, adds speed, more

One day after Apple released its latest update to iOS, the latest version is now running on more than six percent of active iOS devices in North America, an analysis from mobile ad aggregator Chitika finds. While iOS 7.1 also contained security fixes, its major focus was adding a few new or enhanced features and squashing bugs, whereas the rapid adoption of the previous update -- 7.0.6 -- was credited to a major security patch.

Overall, iOS 7.x users account for 80 percent of all North American iOS web traffic, an impressive enough figure by itself (by comparison, only 2.5 percent of Android users are running the last "reference" release, OS 4.4 KitKat, with the two largest groups of users running either 2012's Jelly Bean [4.1] release or 2011's Gingerbread version [2.3.3]). Users appear to be taking up iOS 7.1 only a slightly lower rate as they did the security-oriented 7.0.6 and previous iOS 7 releases, reaching 5.9 percent at the 24-hour mark.

The iOS 7.1 release featured the addition of CarPlay support for upcoming 2014 vehicles, some design tweaks to the keyboard and Phone app buttons, new "slide to power off" and "slide to unlock" animations, more user control over fonts, brightness and other UI features, new support for head-gestures for disabled users, and other "fit and polish" changes to the Camera app, Touch ID consistency, Calendar functionality and other minor enhancements, including significant speedups to OS animations (such as opening and closing folders).

The Chitika tracking, which has generally proven to be in line with Apple's own figures, are drawn from scores of millions of online mobile ad impressions coming from iOS devices across the last two days. Apple released iOS 7.1 on Monday afternoon.
