Pebble sets $5,000 app challenge, opens Android app store

Cash prize, Pebble Steel offered to highest-voted Pebble apps

Pebble has launched the Android version of its smart watch app store, just over one month after the iOS version first became available to use. The app's update to version 2.0 comes at the same time as the company launches a hackathon to create new apps for the crowd-funded device, with the developer of the highest-voted app receiving a grand prize of $5,000 in cash.

The Android version of the Pebble app store is effectively the same in design and functionality as the iOS variant. Running from the smartphone instead of the smart watch, the app store offers a number of categories for users to select apps or watch faces to download from, including "Tools & Utilities" and "Fitness." The app store launch is also accompanied by new partner apps from eBay, Evernote, and Time Warner Cable.

The Pebble App Challenge aims to find the best 16 apps from the Pebble app store, and rewarding the highest rated using the latest version of the software developer kit. Developers can submit new or existing apps up until the deadline on March 23rd, with a public voting period running until the 27th. From March 31st until April 4th, the top 16 apps will be pitted against each other in a knock-out tournament, with the eventual winner receiving the cash. The developers behind the 16 apps will receive a Pebble Steel, regardless of whether or not they win the grand prize.
