Android, Chrome head Pichai reveals SDK for wearable device plans

Google will be helping developers create software for wearable devices, by releasing a software development kit specifically for the gadgets, the head of Android and Chrome has revealed to an audience in Austin, Texas. Sundar Pichai advised during a SXSW interview that the company would provide an Android-based SDK for wearables within the next two weeks, as well as discussing in-car technology, the Chromecast, and other topics.

Pichai pitched that the SDK would take into account readings from various worn sensors, reports Recode. "When we say wearables we think about it much more broadly. It's for partners and developers to figure out. It could be a jacket with sensors. I don't know" advised Pichai at the event. It is unclear if the SDK will offer even more access to Google Glass than what is currently available through its Mirror API, nor if it will help in creating apps for Google's rumored smart watch.

During the talk, Pichai also discussed in-car computing, suggesting a future where cars don't have a hardwired operating system. CNET reports Pichai compared the state of current in-car systems and Apple's CarPlay to a hotel room that offers an in-room stereo that works just with iOS devices, claiming "They're probably losing at least half of their users."

On the subject of the Chromecast, Pichai did not offer a specific number of devices sold in the United States, only that it was in the "millions," and that it is expected to be available internationally in the coming weeks. The recently-released SDK has apparently seen 3,000 registrations by developers, hinting at the number of future potential apps for the streaming device.
