Television range uses sub-pixels to help display 4K content on 1080p panel

Sharp has started to ship a range of 4K-supporting, sub-4K-resolution televisions the company launched at CES in January. The Quattron+ collection, part of its 2014 Aquos range, is capable of playing Ultra HD content, but does so using a 1080p panel that employs Sharp's "Revolution" technology, splitting pixels in two to provide 16 million sub-pixels, giving it an "effective resolution of 3840x2160."

Engadget reports the televisions also take advantage of Sharp's SmartCentral 3.0 guide, which allows users to search across satellite, cable, and streaming services for content without opening each app in turn, with extra control provided by its companion smartphone app. The displays also boast 35-Watt 2.1 audio, 4 HDMI inputs, two USB ports, MHL support, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, Bluetooth connectivity, and active 3D.

The 60-inch, 70-inch, and 80-inch Aquos Q+ Series LED Smart TVs are priced at $2,500, $3,300, and $6,000 respectively, and are shipping now to the United States.
