New Thunderbolt accessory provides eSATA, USB3

Akitio has expanded its line of Thunderbolt accessories with its new Thunder dock. With eSATA, FireWire 800, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt pass-through, the new accessory aims to provide a sensible set of additional ports for most MacBooks manufactured in the past three years. Check out our full review to see if the Thunder is a must-have desk accessory.

I've never heard of Akitio before. Their US headquarters are located in either Brea or Santa Fe Springs depending on which web page you read. Akitio is the retail brand of inXtron, Inc., formerly known as Macpower Peripherals Ltd. or Macpower & Tytech Technology Co., Ltd., has a corporate culture rooted in "Innovation & Technology". With headquarters and R&D in Taiwan and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in mainland China.

As for their product, it looks interesting but I keep asking why vendors are coming out with TB-1 speed products when TB-2 is available. Why limit yourself. Does TB-2 hardware cost that much more?

Well, that's an excellent question. While I didn't write this review (and am a bit envious of the staffer that did!), I did write a similar one for a different dock by StarTech. In the course of my research, I had the same question, but I really couldn't find much on the chipset cost for TB2 versus TB1.

I think some of it can be attributed to the very short lifespan of TB1, versus the non-zero amount of development time that the TB1 breakouts must have taken in the pipeline.

I suspect, over time, that docks like this one will see a silent update to TB2 as chipset prices lower.
