Tech to be supported in Volvo vehicles with Scalable Product Architecture

Carmaker Volvo has published a new promotional video (below), demonstrating how Apple's CarPlay will be integrated into its future car models. Seven apps are shown, including Phone, Music, Maps, Messages, Now Playing, Podcasts, and Spotify. In related press material Volvo notes that integration will be reserved for vehicles supporting its new Scalable Product Architecture, beginning with the XC90 SUV.

Drivers will initially have to connect a device to a car through a Lightning cable, although Wi-Fi support is promised later. The touchscreens iPhones will connect to will also handle various car-specific functions, such as adjusting cabin temperature.

The XC90 is scheduled to debut later this year. Volvo hasn't identified the full range of models it expects to equip with CarPlay.

I have a Mazda CX-5 that accepts music / phone calls wirelessly from my iPhone, wife's iPhone or kid's iPod. How it works is you add all those devices in the list inside Mazda dashboard. Driver select which device is the default one so that the moment you enter the car and start engine, it picks up wirelessly from that device. You can switch to any devices to play music / making phone call on the fly. The dashboard is cool but it needs to be simplified and I hope Apple can pull this off with their CarPlay. You can control the music/phone either from the car dashboard or from your own devices (which acts like a remote controller from the backseat). I find plugging in your iPhone to use CarPlay is a bit backward and inconvenience.
