Karbonn Mobiles could be first to market with Windows Phone, Android smartphone

The first smartphones running both Android and Windows Phone will be launching this year, according to one manufacturer. Karbonn Mobiles of India plans to release a smartphone supporting both mobile operating systems in the next six months, with the company revealing it has recently signed a license agreement with Microsoft for producing Windows Phone devices.

Karbonn chairman Sudhir Hasija told the Times of India "Microsoft has eased the regulations and is opening up the platform for other players," claiming the first launches of Windows Phones will be shipping in three months. The company hopes to ship the dual-OS devices by June, and is said to be targetting "office-going processionals and techies," though has yet to decide on a price range.

The new effort from Karbonn has not been the only dual-booting device effort in recent months. Asus revealed a Windows and Android hybrid tablet in January, in the form of the Transformer Book Duet TD300, with a similar device being offered by Micromax at the same time. In terms of dual-booting smartphones, Geeksphone unveiled the Revolution, though that runs Android and Firefox OS, rather than Windows Phone.
