Set-top no longer just a 'hobby,' CEO hints

More than $1 billion in Apple TVs were sold during 2013, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed during today's annual shareholders meeting. At $99 per device, that translates into almost 10 million units. "It's a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days," Cook told investors, referring back to comments Apple executives have made about the Apple TV's significance and prospects.

Reuters doesn't mention what prompted the statement. Apple is, however, believed to be on the verge of updating the Apple TV, which apart from new apps has remained unchanged since it adopted 1080p and a revised software interface. Today Apple launched a $25 gift card promotion for the current-generation device,

What a new Apple TV might incorporate is uncertain, but rumors have pointed to support for games and/or Bluetooth controllers, or even an integrated 802.11ac router. It might also supply an interface for live TV from compatible providers, the rumored first partner being Time Warner.

There are people got Apple TV not because of the boring and limited contents, but to hack it so you can do more.... like capturing shows from all over the world and view them on big screen. PC users love AppleTV because they can do peer-to-peer without virus and ads. AppleTV = the new Napster for these people.

I sincerely hope that terrine Apple TV interface gets replaced by something you can control via Siri from your phone. C'mon.... enough is enough.
