Apple TV gets $25 gift card; accessories get unique tab on web store

updated 11:04 am EST, Fri February 28, 2014

Apple TV promotion may foreshadow hardware update

(Updated with official confirmation) Apple retail workers are being told that as of today, anyone who buys an Apple TV from an Apple Store will get a free $25 iTunes gift card, according to sources. The promotion is expected to end March 5th. While the offer may simply be a means of boosting Apple TV sales, it's strongly speculated that Apple is trying to clear inventory ahead of a rumored hardware refresh which could take place as soon as April, if not earlier. Third-party vendors have been cutting their own prices in recent weeks.

Apple has meanwhile given accessories their own tab at the online Apple store. This includes things like cables, cases, displays, printers, AirPort routers, and more. Just recently Apple gave the Apple TV its own tab, which helped fuel beliefs that Apple is on the verge of updating the set-top.

Update: Apple has confirmed (PDF) the existence of the Apple TV promotion, which applies to both online and offline orders.

Sweet deal. If people who need TV don't take advantage of this offer, they're pretty much tuned out.
