Google, Facebook team for American Idol voting, tracking

updated 03:59 pm EST, Wed February 26, 2014

Voting window appears when searching Google for American Idol terms

FremantleMedia, 19 Entertainment/CORE Media Group, and the Fox broadcasting network today announced partnerships with search powerhouse Google and social networking giant Facebook, designed to give fans new interactive on-air and online experiences with the series of American Idol XIII live shows and attendant fan voting.

For the first time in television, Google is powering an online voting platform that allows fans to cast votes for Idol finalists directly from Google Search. Facebook will support visual, on-air voting progress updates based on real-time East Coast voting data during select live shows, giving at-home American Idol viewers a look at how finalists are faring in the voting polls.

Beginning with the first finalist performance show on February 26, fans will be able to vote through Google when the vote window opens at the top of the show. Any of these searches will reveal a voting platform where fans can cast votes for favorite performers.

After casting their votes, fans will have the opportunity to share who they voted for on Google+, follow contestants, join community conversations or participate in Google Hangouts about the show. All methods of voting, including the new Google-managed version, are managed and certified by Telescope, an independent vote-management company.

"We've partnered with American Idol to make it easy and convenient for fans to vote for their favorite Idol performers using Google Search -- whether they're on their computers, phones or tablets," said Google Vice President of Product Management Anjali Joshi. "People come to Google to find information, and we're excited to now also power their voting experience."
