Jury snubs Samsung, Microsoft, others; iPhone 5s passed over for best smartphone

Despite not having a presence at the massive Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, Spain, Apple nonetheless scored a win in the Global Mobile Awards, awarded by the governing body of the MWC convention, the GMS (Groupe Speciale Mobile) Association. The iPad Air won for "best mobile tablet," ignoring its various competitors and latest entries from Microsoft, Samsung, LG and others. The HTC One was awarded "best smartphone."

The judges for the award said they awarded the prize to Apple because "the iPad Air packs class-leading performance in an attractive and svelte frame, while its ecosystem has an undisputed advantage in the number of format-optimized apps." The consensus of reviews of the iPad Air is that it is the best full-size tablet Apple has offered since the iPad 2, finally exceeding the thinness and lightness of the second-gen iPad while continuing to add sizable improvements in every area.

In other awards, the HTC One grabbed "best smartphone" but Nokia's Lumia 520 was awarded a "best low-cost smartphone (sub-$150)" prize, and LG was honored with the "most innovative device manufacturer" of the year. AT&T scored a win for "best consumer mobile service," and CityMapper won "best overall mobile app" while the iOS-only Device 6 gained the "best entertainment app" and iOS-only CamMe by PointGrab was honored with the "most innovative mobile app" award.
