Report: LG to manufacture Google Smartwatch, first reveal in March

updated 09:28 am EST, Mon February 24, 2014

New device expected to be widely compatible, be powered by Android

A pair of sources have recently popped up claiming that electronics manufacturer LG and Google were teaming up to build out the search engine behemoth's second wearable computing device, in the form of its first smartwatch. The device is expected to be compatible with multiple smartphones, unlike Samsung's first effort in the space, and will be powered by at least an offshoot of Google's Android operating system.

The Wall Street Journal noted that LG chief of mobile Park Jong-seok spoke with a pool of reporters prior to the Mobile World Congress, and obliquely referred to the device, pointing to the company's partnership with Google over the Nexus line.

CNet claims that the first reveal of the smartwatch will be made in March, with a physical appearance of it at the Google I/O conference slated for June. The site believes that Google's smartwatch will be approached similarly to that of its smartphone business, with multiple manufacturers supplying a variety of models to users.

Sony, Pebble, and Samsung are all currently shipping smartphones, with limited market success. A Pre-Mobile World Congress release showed Samsung's new Gear-series watch, now powered by its custom OS Tizen -- a departure from the Android-powered original Galaxy Gear watch, released in mid-2013 and widely derided by critics and consumers.
