Tizen-powered Galaxy Gear successors are incremental upgrade

Samsung has unveiled two smart watches as successors to the Galaxy Gear, confirming rumors from yesterday. Launched the day before Samsung is expected to reveal the Galaxy S5, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are updated versions that retains the styling of the original but makes a number of improvements, including switching from running on Android to Tizen, and removing the Galaxy branding altogether.

Both offer a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 320x320, backed by a 1GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. The watches also have a heart rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth 4.0 LE connectivity with "more than dozens of Samsung Galaxy smartphones," and a 300mAh battery said to last for a longer 2-3 days of normal usage, or up to 6 days with "low usage." The main Gear 2 includes a 2-megapixel autofocus camera, capable of taking 1920x1080 images and recording HD 720p video at 30fps, while the Gear 2 Neo does not offer a camera at all.

Though the general design of the watch has not changed much, there are still a number of welcome changes. The camera in the Gear 2 has been moved from being embeded in the watch strap and into the top of the watch body itself, allowing the wearer to change the strap for an alternate version for both devices. The watches are also IP67 certified for dust and water resistance. Both will be available to buy in Charcoal Black and Wild Orange color options, with the Gear 2 adding a Gold Brown version, and the Gear 2 Neo also shipping in Mocha Grey.
