Steep price increase comes with renamed Lovefilm service

Amazon is readying a price hike for its Prime service in Germany before the end of the month. On February 26, users will see a rate increase that comes after the company renamed its streaming video service Lovefilm to Amazon Prime Instant Video in order to pair it with existing Prime subscriptions.

Germany's rate for Amazon Prime membership will raise 59 percent, from 29€ ($40) to 49€ ($67) per year. This follows the previously-announced price hike in the United Kingdom that will bring the annual fee to £79 ($131) from £49 ($82) for an increase of 62 percent. New users in both regions will be able to lock in the price before the increase if they sign up for a trial before February 26.

Even though the price increase comes at a cost to customers who may not use the video service, customers who use both Amazon Prime and Lovefilm Instant will see an overall savings. A combination of both subscriptions would cost a UK resident £121 ($201), while German users would pay 113€ ($155). Instead, the combination service will see a decrease in cost of 65 percent and 43 percent respectively.

There has been no word on whether or not the $79 rate in the United States would be changing in the near future. Amazon has already tied its US video service to Prime membership, making some videos free for Prime members.
