Oculus Rift developer's kit production halts due to supply shortage

updated 01:00 pm EST, Sat February 22, 2014

Oculus gives no timeline as it searches for sources

Virtual reality headset manufacturer Oculus announced on February 19 that they were forced to halt production on further developer kits, as components needed to make the Rift are no longer being manufactured. An undisclosed number of units are still available, but further unit production will have to wait until the necessary components can be re-sourced.

The company didn't offer any specifics such as naming the components responsible for the production hold up on their official message board, nor was a time frame available for production to resume. For now, there are still a small number of dev units for sale, but the regions in which they are available is limited to only a few countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan and countries in the European Union.

For those owners of the over 50,000 Rift units released so far, Community Manager Andres Hernandez did inform Reddit that the company would "still have a reserve to be used for RMA purposes."
