Apple files plans to crank out second 'tactical datacenter' in NC

updated 08:20 pm EST, Thu February 20, 2014

New plan shows 14,246 square foot, 25 foot tall concrete structure

Permits filed with the Maiden, NC planning commission have revealed that Apple is planning a 14,246 square foot "tactical datacenter" as an adjunct to its existing facilities in the area. The center will come complete with server space, all the requisite cooling apparatus, as well as offices and other business-related spaces.

The original data center expansion on the site is larger, at 21,030 square feet. Plans for the new center show 11 cooling units for data purposes, with two additional units for the office spaces. The new facility will be 25 feet tall, and will be constructed of precast concrete wall panels alongside steel columns, according to the Hickory Record

Apple has the land to complete its original vision of a pair of 500,000 square foot behemoth datacenters. The existing tactical center and the new one don't impinge upon the land set aside for the future expansion.
