Bloomberg: HTC creating three wearable devices, Toq-based smart watch

updated 06:37 am EST, Thu February 20, 2014

HTC smart watch will be shown privately at Mobile World Congress

HTC will be showing part of a collection of smart watches behind closed doors at Mobile World Congress next week, according to a report. Bloomberg claims the company will use the trade show to demonstrate two prototype watches, one of which is apparently based on the Qualcomm Toq offering the same low-powered Mirasol display, Bluetooth connectivity, and music playback functionality.

Chairwoman Cher Wang previously advised the company planned to launch a wearable device later this year, with the intention of doing so in time before the holiday shopping season. At the time, Wang hinted at a possible Mirasol display, in stating the company had to "solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems" of such a device, something Qualcomm's display technology is able to fix.

A second watch will be a Google Now-based device with an AMOLED screen, claims the report's source. The third device is said to be more of an activity tracker than a smart watch, though it will still have a "thin touch-screen display" and music playback capabilities.

At the moment, the company is said not to be planning a public display of the devices, though it is highly likely they will be demonstrated to representatives of carriers at the event.
