Time Warner Cable hiking 'below the line' fees for 2014

Most users will see $15 or more increase in monthly bills

Claiming that an increase in billing is giving better value to customers, Time Warner Cable is hiking subscription costs in nearly all of its markets. Fees are increasing for set-top box rentals by $1.26, on-screen guide access from either $0.50 or free to $3.27 per outlet, a modem lease fee being implemented at $6, and a new Broadcast TV Fee of $2.25.

Many of these fees are "below the line" and not included in monthly subscription fees, allowing advertised costs to remain the same. Time Warner Cable claims that the new "Broadcast TV Fee" is the result of retransmission fee increases, the majority of which are included in the advertised cost.

The company says in its notice to customers that "this change is being driven by several factors. One is that the rates TV networks and programming providers are charging us to deliver your favorite channels have risen to new heights in the last year. We work our hardest to control these costs on your behalf, but the price of programming is increasing dramatically. Another factor is that the cost to maintain and grow our network has also increased."

    Wait.... they have a fee for the on-screen guide? WTF? I am sooooo glad I ditched their sorry excuse for TV service years ago.

    I never understood how these guys (and the cell phone service providers) are allowed to get away with this stuff. Chevy doesn't charge me an extra $100 in "donut fees" over their quoted price due to the cost of providing their workers coffee and donuts in the morning. It's simply assumed that your costs are the cost of doing business and should be reflected in your price.

    Buying content and providing the hardware to display that content isn't an optional fee. It's the cost of you to do your business. It should be reflected in your total advertised price and not some fancy add-on.
