T-Mobile concedes: gives $250 for BlackBerry loyalist trade-ins

updated 08:51 pm EST, Wed February 19, 2014

Increased offer only applies to the purchase of a new BlackBerry Q10, Z10

In a slight nod towards BlackBerry CEO John Chen's "outrage" at T-Mobile's $200 trade-in offer for BlackBerry handset users, the wireless carrier has offered an additional $50 trade-in value towards another BlackBerry phone. The previous offer of $200 for the trade-in towards any other manufacturer's handset still stands, however.

BlackBerry's chief marketing officer, Mike Sievert wrote in a post addressing the brouhaha that "the passion we've seen from the BlackBerry loyalists over the past couple days has been pretty amazing." He also noted in the post that "the market value of used BlackBerrys ranges from $5 per device to a little over $100" and "our new offer of $200 for your BlackBerry is intended to go way beyond current market value."

Sievert clarified the deal, saying that users need only "trade in your current working BlackBerry and get an extra $50 toward a new BlackBerry 10 device. That's a total of $250 toward a beautiful new BlackBerry Q10 or Z10, or $200 toward any other device." Users are currently unable to purchase the Z10 or the Q10 in any other condition besides refurbished, despite being specifically mentioned in the post.

Devices offered for trade must power on, have no cracks in the screen, and have no signs of water damage. Older "retro-cool BlackBerry" devices like the BlackBerry 6820 also qualify for the offer.
