TPK rumored as supplying touch panels for Apple iWatch

Display expected to use silver nanowire touchscreen tech

Apple may be using TPK as its touch panel supplier for the iWatch, according to rumors surfaced by the China Times. The watch is expected to use silver nanowire touchscreen technology developed by TPK in partnership with Nissha Printing. TPK is slated to start producing its first silver nanowire panels in April, but those for the iWatch aren't expected to enter mass production until much later, in the second half of the year.

The Times further claims that the iWatch will use a flexible AMOLED display with 3D protective glass. Silver nanowire may be essential in that case, since unlike the indium tin oxide used in most touch panels, it can be applied to curved surfaces. Other reports have differed, though, on whether the iWatch will use a flat or curved screen.

Aiding the credibility of the rumors is TPK's status as a major touch panel supplier that's worked with Apple for several years. It was a key supplier for the first-generation iPad, for instance, and the majority supplier for the iPhone 4S.
