Samsung details devices receiving Android KitKat in United States

updated 12:52 pm EST, Tue February 18, 2014

Majority of Galaxy S devices will get Android 4.4 update

Samsung has confirmed it will be bringing Android 4.4.2 to a large number of its mobile devices in the United States. The upgrade to Android KitKat, rumored last month, will apparently start rolling out to devices from today onwards, and while the timing will vary between carriers and individual devices, it will continue "throughout the coming months."

The devices listed for the Android update include "select carrier variants" of smartphones and tablets. Devices receiving the update include the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S 4 mini, Galaxy S 4 Active, Galaxy S 4 zoom, Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III mini, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy Light, Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab 3, and both the Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition.

Samsung details that the update will include a "more intuitive user interface," an integrated location menu for GPS activation and networking, enhanced messaging with the choice between Messages and Hangouts as the preferred default messaging application, and upgraded Google Mobile Service apps.

The company did not mention if there will be similar roll-outs of the update for non-US markets.
