Guidance could help make Google Glass more socially acceptable

Google has provided advice to owners of its Glass headwear, by offering a list of Do's" and "Don'ts" for its usage. The guidance page on the Glass website reads as a list of suggestions for best usage of Google Glass itself, as well as use of the device in social situations, including one item specifically advising "Don't be creepy or rude (aka, a 'Glasshole')".

The list suggests for users to "Explore the world around you," to "take advantage of the Glass voice commands," and to "be an active and vocal member of the Glass Explorer Community," though it also warns not to "Rock Glass while doing high-impact sports."

The rest of the hints are more about managing the public perception of Glass and it's users. It warns potential users that they cannot "expect to be ignored," due to questions from strangers, and to use the various security features such as the screen lock, in case others want to try it out without the owner's knowledge, or to steal it. The guide requests users to be polite, by asking for permission to record photos or videos, and to develop their own etiquette for various social scenarios.

The hint list follows a number of incidents where the users could have better used or stopped using their Glass. One Glass owner was pulled from a movie by Federal officials after he was accused of piracy, despite the device being switched off. Another recently fought a traffic ticket in a California court for "driving with a monitor visible," though this case was later dropped.
