First BitTorrent Live app to bring P2P broadcast to mobile

updated 01:20 pm EST, Sun February 16, 2014

Application to lower the broadcast barrier for news

BitTorrent is set to release the first peer-to-peer broadcast application for mobile devices based on its BitTorrent Live protocol. Positioned as a new way bring news to the people, the idea will be to distribute news through P2P crowdsourcing as it happens, instead of relying on broadcast news.

The Live protocol uses the same idea of P2P transfers as a torrent, but applies it to streaming video. BitTorrent Live will create a broadcast system that "removes bandwidth, cost and infrastructure as barriers to streaming. The more people that tune in, the more resilient the stream." The project went into beta last March.

No date has been set for a release of the mobile streaming product, but BitTorrent says an alpha product version will be "later this year."
