Google Play Services SDK update allows Chromecast-enabled apps

updated 09:25 am EST, Fri February 14, 2014

Update follows release of Chromecast SDK to developers in early February

Owners of the Google Chromecast may find more apps will work with their device in the near future, as the latest Google Play Services update for Android has rolled-out to Android devices, and the accompanying SDK has been issued to developers. Version 4.2 of Google Play Services adds a number of APIs for developers to use in their Android applications, including the Chromecast API the company released an SDK for earlier this month.

While the Chromecast SDK was issued on February 3rd, allowing developers to add Chromecast support to their apps, Phandroid claims Google asked developers not to release app updates with the feature until Play Services 4.2 had rolled out completely. The Play Services 4.2 SDK release gives developers the last key required for Chromecast, as well as updated Drive APIs and other features.

The impending addition of more Chromecast-enabled apps comes before the company is expected to ship the streaming dongle in the United Kingdom. The launch, tentatively scheduled for March 1st via a national retailer, could be a sign Google is prepared to release the device into more territories, aside from the United States.
