Briefly: Bolt's free calls on Android, CloudFlare upgrades encryption

updated 10:06 pm EST, Fri February 14, 2014

Bolt replaces Android phone's dialler, offers free VOIP calling

Android users have another option for a free VOIP calling service, with the recent release of Bolt. Bolt replaces the user's default phone dialler with a unified tool that activates VOIP when needed and connected to traditional phones otherwise. Calls made to other Bolt users are routed over the web for free, using 60KB per minute. Favorite contacts are automatically discovered and updated based on who one calls the most. Currently only available on Android, an iOS version of Bolt is expected in the future.

CloudFlare adds full transport layer security

Content delivery network CloudFlare has upgraded its web-encryption capabilities in an effort to prevent spying when data travels between its own servers and its customers. The new mode, known as transport layer security (TLS) provides encryption and cryptographic authentication for backed traffic -- and when passing between CloudFlare and its customers, its data is authenticated using certificate authorities. Additionally, CloudFlare is publishing its source code so other sites or services using the nginx Web server can access it. CloudFlare performance and security services are available as a tier of plans, ranging from free to Enterprise level ($5,000 monthly).
