FCC to revisit net neutrality rules, restore blocked policies

updated 01:33 am EST, Wed February 12, 2014

Court challenge cleared way for ISPs to charge for faster access

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has confirmed that the agency is working on a new plan to restore net neutrality provisions overturned by a court case brought by Verizon, reports CNet. In addition, a number of US senators have written to Wheeler directly, asking the FCC to "move quickly" to restore neutrality rules.

As an example, Verizon could have allowed a website, say Facebook, to pay Verizon to have faster, more direct access than sites that didn't pay. ISPs owned by cable providers want to throttle competitors like Netflix in order to promote their own video-on-demand services. The senators told Wheeler that "consumers, entrepreneurs and innovators deserve to know their right to view or use the content and services of their choice online will be protected."

Democrats in Congress, opposed by Republicans, have also attempted to legislate the rules back into law. Wheeler mentioned in a speech on Monday that the "outline" of such a plan would arrive "in the coming days."

Yes, we will form a preliminary committee to look into the possibility of whether or not a committee to study the effects of possible net-neutrality regulations would have on left-handed woodchucks, which we will then take under advisement as to whether an action committee should be formed to consider the regulations submitted by the 4 largest ISPs, and how to enact them without getting the FCC head fired.

I suppose that if you consider the campaign contributions to the house members against net neutrality, you might find the names of some of the internet providers. Pocketbook first, public second.
