WSJ: Nokia will launch 'Normandy' Android smartphone this month

updated 04:13 pm EST, Mon February 10, 2014

Report claims Nokia X launch will take place at Mobile World Congress

Nokia will be launching its long-rumored Android-based smartphone at Mobile World Congress, sources of the Wall Street Journal claim. The smartphone, codenamed "Normandy" and thought to be called the Nokia X, is said by the report to be aimed at emerging markets rather than developed regions, and apparently will not be used to promote Google's own services.

Report sources state the Nokia X will not offer the Google Play app store on the forked version of Android, eschewing it in favor of a similar app marketplace created by Nokia. Preloaded apps on the device will include offerings from both Microsoft and Nokia, including Here maps and Mix Radio.

Earlier rumors suggested the Nokia X would have a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. Running on a forked version of Android, it would have dual SIM card slots, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a rear 5-megapixel camera, and a 4-inch 480x800 display. A recent teaser video suggests the event could also see the launch of the Lumia 929, a Windows Phone device destined for Verizon, and potentially the Tresure Tag proximity-sensing Bluetooth accessory.
