iTunes Radio reaches Australia in first international expansion

updated 02:39 pm EST, Mon February 10, 2014

Canada, UK, New Zealand rumored to be coming soon

iTunes Radio is now available to people in Australia, Apple has announced. There the service is functionally identical to its American sibling, in that it's primarily supported by advertising, but free to people who have an iTunes Match subscription. To listen, people need a Mac or Windows PC with iTunes, an Apple TV, or an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Australia is the first country outside the US to get iTunes Radio. Some reports have hinted that Canada, New Zealand, and the UK will also get the service in early 2014, but although Apple has begun hiring, it hasn't announced any dates. Reaching internationally should give the company an edge over one of its main rivals in streaming radio, Pandora, which remains US-only. It may have a tougher time displacing Spotify, which began in Europe and has a solid footprint there.
