Google Chromecast heading to retail in the United Kingdom from March 1

updated 10:34 am EST, Fri February 7, 2014

UK sale will mark first time Chromecast available outside of United States

Google will be launching its Chromecast streaming device in the United Kingdom, a retailer has revealed. The dongle is set to go on sale through the Currys PC World chain of stores with a tentative street date of March 1st, and marks the first time the Chromecast will be available to buy in a country outside the United States, with the potential for more regional launches to follow.

While Currys have confirmed the release to The Next Web, a Google spokesperson advised it to be a provisional release date which could still change. It is likely to also go on sale through Google Play in the country, but it is unclear if other retailers will offer the device, nor how much it will be sold for. Currently, it is priced at $35 in the United States.

At the moment, the Chromecast supports casting from a Chrome tab to a television, as well as the usual list of Google apps, and third parties including Netflix and Vevo. More apps are expected to work with the device in the future, following Google's launch of the official Google Cast SDK, with Beats and Rdio both claiming to work on supporting the streaming device.
