Also first Apple Store in all of South America
Brazil's first Apple Store will open in Rio de Janeiro's VillageMall on Saturday, February 15, Apple has announced. The shop will launch at 11AM that Saturday; regular hours will run from then to 11PM Monday through Saturday, and from 1PM to 9PM on Sundays. Apple already has a number of workshops planned, including ones for the iPhone and iPhoto on the 15th.
The store has been under development since at least 2011. Within the past year, Apple has been gradually expanding its retail footprint to cities and countries that have never before had an Apple Store, such as Turkey.
It remains to be seen how well the store will do. Owing to high import charges, many Apple products are vastly more expensive in Brazil than they are in the US, or even China. An unlocked 16GB iPhone 5s costs the equivalent of $1,167, versus just $649 in the US.
