Apple to restart iPhone 4 production for India, Indonesia, Brazil

updated 09:24 am EST, Wed February 5, 2014

High cost of iPhone thought to be hurting Apple marketshare

Apple is planning to restart iPhone 4 production in order to sell the device in India, Indonesia, and Brazil, says India's The Economic Times. The paper cites three senior executives familiar with Apple's plans. Last month, there were indications that Apple would relaunch the iPhone 4 in India, but it was unclear if Apple was planning to restart manufacturing or just use unsold inventory. According to the Times, Foxconn has already begun building new units.

Although the iPhone 4 is generally considered outdated -- it's the oldest device capable of running iOS 7 -- Apple has had a tough time gaining marketshare in countries like India, owing to the cost of more recent devices. The cheapest iPhone 5s, for instance, is 53,500 rupees, or about $856. Even the iPhone 5c starts at 41,900 rupees ($670). An 8GB iPhone 4, by contrast, goes for just 22,900 rupees ($360). Apple faces stiff competition from companies like Samsung, which are able to sell Android devices at lower prices while still keeping modern performance specs.
