Facebook board member investor in FiftyThree
Facebook may be formally challenged for the use of the word "Paper" as an app name. FiftyThree, the developers of the iPad drawing app Paper has requested Facebook change the name of its latest magazine-style app, which is using the same name. To reinforce the request, FiftyThree has filed with the United States Patent and Trade Office for a trademark on the name, with a filing of January 30, the same day as the Facebook launch.
FiftyThree's Paper app won Apple's 2012 iPad App of the Year award after launching on March 29, 2012. The company is not only a Facebook developer, but one of Facebook's board members is an investor in the company. Nearly 500,000 pages from FiftyThree's Paper app have been shared on Facebook.
"An app about stories shouldn't start with someone else's story," FiftyThree CEO Georg Petschnigg stated. "Facebook should stop using our brand name." Reportedly, Facebook has apologized to FiftyThree for use of the name, but has made no offer to change the name or otherwise solve the problem.
