Google releases long-awaited Chromecast SDK to developers

updated 02:54 pm EST, Mon February 3, 2014

Should open up many more iOS, Android, Chrome apps for casting

Google has released the finished and long-anticipated Google Cast Software Development Kit, needed for third-party developers wanting to add Chromecast support to apps. The package includes resources for iOS, Android, and websites in Chrome. Until now, Google has only worked with individual developers to expand Chromecast support.

The change should result in a dramatic surge in Chromecast-compatible apps and websites, especially as a number of developers have only been waiting on the SDK to toggle features. To date, non-Google apps with Chromecast support have included Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Pandora, VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, Plex, PostTV, Viki, and RealPlayer Cloud. When the device shipped in July of last year, the only compatible apps included Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play Music/TV & Movies.

The $35 peripheral lets users push audio and video to TVs through computers, phones, and tablets. While people can stream Chrome tabs directly, other apps simply tell the Chromecast to fetch content from a remote source.
