Google Now notification cards arrives on Chrome Beta for desktops

updated 02:19 pm EST, Mon February 3, 2014

Range of cards from mobile Google Now shown in beta version of Chrome

Google has rolled out Google Now to the beta version of the Chrome browser, just weeks after the Chrome Canary experimental browser received it. Available for OS X, Windows, and Chrome OS, the update to Chrome Beta adds the card-based notifications, previously seen on iOS and Android mobile devices, to the desktop browser.

In order to use Google Now, users will need to sign into Chrome using their normal Google account credentials, the same account used by Google Now on smartphones. The notifications will appear as a bell icon on the desktop, according to the Google Chrome Blog, with Chrome OS users seeing a number icon instead. Not all cards shown on the smartphone version will be displayed on the desktop, such as weather, traffic updates, reminders for events, and sports results, while location-dependent cards will be based on the location of the smartphone rather than the computer itself.

The rapid migration of Google Now from Canary to Chrome Beta strongly suggests it could reach the normal version of Chrome in the near future, possibly within the next month.
