Dell preparing to lay off 15,000 employees this week, claims report

updated 07:59 am EST, Mon February 3, 2014

All conference rooms booked at Dell HQ for alleged mass layoffs

Dell could be preparing to lay off over 15,000 employees this week, according to a report. As part of the restructuring efforts after completing its return to a private ownership, the computer manufacturer will apparently be making the staff reductions globally and in all departments, with departments that have already been affected by layoffs expected to cull another 15 percent of the workforce.

Sources of The Register claim every conference room is booked at the Round Rock headquarters, with every member of HR and security staff also expected to attend. Employees in the United States that are laid off will apparently receive a severance package of two months's pay with an extra week of pay per year of service, a 75% bonus, COBRA health insurance for 18 months, and outplacement services, though it is unclear what international staff will receive.

Internal e-mails received by the report mention "simplifying client support structure," combining consumer and commercial sides, and possible changes to support in the future. These comments suggest a homogenization of support for the company, as it slowly restructures and moves into offering mobile and cloud services, in order to counter the shrinking desktop PC market.
