Nokia's gyroscopic OIS system available to other smartphone producers

Two-axis gyro module from PureView Lumias hits open market

The optical imaging stabilization technique used by Nokia in some of its Lumia smartphones is now able to be bought by other device manufacturers for use in smartphones and tablets. ST Microelectronics is now selling the module, which involves a two-axis gyroscope with an angular rate sensor, on the open market for the first time since the exclusivity period with Nokia expired.

The gyro module itself costs $1.70 per unit in quantities of 1,000, reports The Register, which is said to be three times the cost of headphones usually bundled with the smartphone. Despite the high individual price of the module, potential customers would likely make deals to buy higher quantities, in turn lowering the overall cost.

The value of the component comes from its ability to lower the impact of shaking or bumps, something Nokia demonstrated with the PureView cameras in the Lumia 920, Lumia 1020, and Lumia 1520 handsets. Despite the feature's overall usefulness, it came under fire shortly after the Lumia 920's introduction, when it was discovered Nokia faked the optical image stabilization using a film crew and what is was thought to be a DSLR.
