Apple, Samsung continue to lead in smartphone market share
Smartphone shipments for the entire of 2013 have crossed the 1 billion unit barrier for the first time, according to figures from IDC and its its Mobile Phone Tracker. A total of 1,004.2 million units were shipped last year, which is said to be an increase of 38.4 percent from the 725.3 million smartphones shipped in 2012, with smartphones now accounting for 55.1 percent of mobile phone shipments for the year, up from last year's 41.7-percent share.
Figures from Strategy Analytics suggest a slightly different story. While it claims a similar 41-percent growth in shipments for 2013 over 2012, it believes that shipment numbers fell short of the milestone, reaching just 990 million units.
The full-year shipment figures from IDC place Samsung in first place with 31.3 percent of the market, up from the 30.3 percent it reached in 2012. Apple is said to cover 15.3 percent of shipments, down from the 18.7 percent last year. Third place Huawei is followed by LG and Lenovo, representing 4.9 percent, 4.8 percent, and 4.5 percent respectively. Other smartphone producers make up the remaining 39.3 percent of the market.
For the fourth quarter, Samsung achieved first place with 82 million shipments and 28.8 percent of the market, though it apparently suffered a decline compared to the third quarter. Apple secured a record shipment volume in the fourth quarter of 51 million units and 17.9 percent of the market share, thanks to the iPhone 5s and 5c. Though Apple is said to have the lowest year-on-year increase of all the main vendors, IDC suggests that the sales of the iPhone on China Mobile could help it get closer to overtaking Samsung.
By contrast, Huawei achieved the highest year-on-year increase, reaching third place for the quarter with 16.4 million shipments and 5.8 percent of market share. The battle for fourth place is close between Lenovo and LG, with 13.9 million and 13.2 million shipments respectively putting them in fourth with 4.9 percent and fifth with a 4.6-percent share. IDC believes that Lenovo could challenge Huawei for third place if it succeeds in entering more developed markets in 2014, though apparently LG only narrowly edged out ZTE for fifth place.
