'Up to Apple' if it still wants ties with Nest, says Fadell

Google buyout complicates relationships

It's "up to Apple" whether or not it wants to continue ties with smarthome peripheral maker Nest Labs, says the CEO of the latter firm, Tony Fadell. Fadell is credited as a key figure behind the iPod, and that connection has helped to get products like the Nest Learning Themostat into Apple Stores. Nest however was recently bought out by Google, Apple's main opponent in smartphones, tablets, and Internet services.

Fadell tells Bloomberg that Nest has no plans to pull its products from Apple stores, or abandon iOS support in favor of Android exclusivity. "We want to make sure that we offer those things to them [Apple customers], and it's for Apple to figure out whether or not they want to continue," he remarks. He calls Apple a "valued partner," even noting that a number of his former co-workers congratulated him when the Google buyout was announced.

The Apple/Nest relationship has already soured somewhat. Apple marketing head Phil Schiller recently unfollowed Fadell and Nest on Twitter, suggesting at least that he isn't as interested in promoting Nest products. To date, though, Nest products are still in Apple Stores.

Why would Apple pull the products? They didn't pull Chrome, Google Search or even Google Maps. This sounds like a red herring on Nest/Google's part...a means to justify them changing focus to Android.

Google acquisitions tend to lose their penchant for innovation (Google Voice), be altered so much that they lose their own character (YouTube), or die all together (Meebo, Sparrow). The rare exception to this may be Android. Beyond Android, a google acquisition rarely bodes well for the acquired.

I'll take a wait and see with Nest. If I need one in the short term, I'd probably buy a competing product.
