Qualcomm acquires vast collection of Palm, Bitfone patents from HP

updated 05:30 am EST, Fri January 24, 2014

1,400 US patents and applications bought by Qualcomm

Processor producer Qualcomm has acquired a considerable haul of patents from HP, including some originally from the portfolios of iPAQ, Bitfone, and Palm. Though the sale price was not revealed by the company in a statement, it did reveal that the purchase includes approximately 1,400 granted patents and pending applications from the United States, and another 1,000 from other countries.

The proportion of patents from each company is unknown, but Qualcomm advises that the technologies covered in the acquisition include "fundamental mobile operating system techniques," and it "further enhances the strength and diversity" of Qualcomm's mobile patent portfolio. Considering Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor range is used on a vast number of smartphones and mobile devices, the extra patents only strengthen the company's position when it comes down to the frequently-occurring patent lawsuits.

This is the latest instance of HP selling off technology from companies it had previously purchased. After buying Palm in 2010 for $1.2 billion, in what is thought by TechCrunch to be a patent acquisition move. HP later sold off WebOS to LG in February last year, though it did not include the associated patents as part of the purchase. LG is now working on implementing the operating system in its smart TVs.
