TiVo remains fully committed to Roamio, working on cloud potential

A significant part of TiVo's hardware design team has been laid off, though the company warns that it is still committed to producing hardware. Vice president of corporate communications Steve Wymer confirmed the layoffs, but was quick to speak against reports of an exit from devices, claiming "It's not right to say that TiVo's out of the hardware business."

Sources of Wired revealed that five engineers on the company's hardware team had been let go, leaving a skeleton crew of two to provide support. Though it has laid off a large proportion of its industrial designers, TiVo told the report that it would continue to use third-party designers for hardware in the future. The same source claimed the company was leaving hardware and was moving towards a software-based future.

Speaking to The Verge, Wymer claimed the change in focus relates to a new network DVR platform the company announced at CES. "We have exploding potential in the cloud, we shift our resources and our personnel based on our priorities." In terms of hardware, the company is still bullish on what it is producing, calling the Roamio "one of our core businesses and our shining jewel." Indeed, in the face of competitors such as Aereo and streaming services like Netflix, TiVo's hardware component could indeed give it the advantage it needs.
