Google expands Fiber registration for residents in Provo, Utah

Service reaches former iProvo footprint

Google has announced that additional residents in Provo, Utah can now sign up for the company's Google Fiber high-speed Internet service. The expansion includes any potential customers who already live along the former iProvo network, a fiber-optic backbone that was established by the city and later sold to Google, though activation will require a new fiber cable to be brought directly into the home.

"We can't install fiber to everyone in Provo all at once, so we're going to work in waves, starting with the North Park area next month and finishing in the Foothills area hopefully by the end of this year," Google notes.

Potential customers can choose from three service plans, starting with a free level that provides 5Mbps download and 1Mbps upload speeds after a one-time $30 installation fee. Higher tiers include Gigabit Internet for $70 per month, or a Gigabit Internet and TV bundle for $120 per month.

Google urges potential customers to make sure they sign up before the deadline for their "fiberhood." The first neighborhoods, with deadlines in February and March, include North Park, downtown Provo, and Pioneer/West Provo. Residents in Grandview can sign up later in the spring, while North Provo, Southeast Provo and the Foothills have summer-2014 deadlines.

The search giant expects to have installation completed in different neighborhoods this spring and summer.
