Report: Eemshaven in the running for Apple European data center

updated 03:45 pm EST, Wed January 22, 2014

Port city equipped with wind farm, fiberoptic cable terminus

According to local press reports, Apple is considering building a new European data center similar to its Prineville, Oregon location for its iTunes and iCloud services in the Dutch port city of Eemshaven. The city currently houses a Google facility, with a $2 billion Microsoft site under construction, and is uniquely suited with extant facilities -- including a transatlantic fiberoptic data cable terminus and a wind farm -- to host data centers.

Website iPhoneClub.nl broke the news of the location, declaring the Apple code name as "Saturn," a name that has been rumored for some time as a forthcoming Apple project. The website expects the facility to bring 150 to 200 jobs to the area.

The area has become a technology hotbed as of late. Eemshaven is serviced by a 156-megawatt wind farm, as well as the terminal for a transatlantic fiberoptic cable. Reportedly, a forty-acre plot has already been set aside for Apple's construction of the facility.
