Google rates Internet providers by YouTube streaming quality

Canadian ISPs tested on streaming performance

Google will be offering users information about their Internet connection's capabilities for YouTube streaming, under a new monitoring system. The search company's Video Quality Report will analyze the connection offered by Internet service providers (ISP) and identify those that offer the best YouTube experience, in a move to help its end users have a more satisfactory Internet experience.

The report will grade how well an ISP provides HD YouTube videos in a specific area, reports the Financial Post. In order to be classified as a "YouTube HD Verified" ISP, customers must be able to view 720p video with smooth playback for 90-percent of the time. A rating for "Standard Definition" will be offered for ISPs that can do the same for 360p videos, though a third "lower definition" category is reserved for ISPs that offer a lower level of service. The results offered will be based on individual regions, with the video quality monitored over a 30-day period.

"We wanted to give users a measure of performance that they can truly understand," advised YouTube director of product management Shiva Rajarman. "The other side is we felt this would be beneficial for ISPs too, because now they can describe their service and the various product offerings and price points they might have to their customers in a way that they can truly understand."

The report will initially cover ISPs based in Canada, and could be rolled out to other countries in the future.
