Google switching to Bay Trail for Nexus 8?

updated 01:50 pm EST, Tue January 21, 2014

Rumor points to continued Asus partnership

Google may be refocusing its Nexus tablet efforts on the eight-inch market and considering a possible switch to Intel's Bay Trail platform, according to rumors posted on DigiTimes. Unnamed sources in the supply chain suggest Google is experiencing weaker demand in the seven-inch Android segment, as several viable competitors have entered the field with price tags below $175.

The report suggests that Google will maintain its partnership with Asus to build the Nexus 8, continuing the tradition established with the first- and second-generation Nexus 7. The switch to Bay Trail is viewed as less certain, however, as Qualcomm is still said to be under consideration for ARM hardware.

Sources for DigiTimes have a mixed record for rumor accuracy, though the Nexus 8 details corroborate an earlier leak on Google's Android website that showed a mystery tablet that is larger than the Nexus 7 but smaller than the Nexus 10.

If the latest information proves accurate, Google may release more information on the Nexus 8 sometime in February.
