Verizon Wireless adds 1.7M subscribers in Q4

updated 10:30 am EST, Tue January 21, 2014

Over 4M new customers in 2013

Verizon Wireless has announced its fourth-quarter earnings, which have been bolstered by 1.7 million new subscribers. The company also reports significant progress in its LTE deployment, spreading 4G service across 99 percent of its existing 3G footprint and reaching approximately 97 percent of the US population.

Smartphones accounted for 70 percent of Verizon's wireless subscriptions by the end of the year, up from 67 percent in the third quarter.

Strong performance in the wireless market helped Verizon achieve $31.1 in total operating revenues for the fourth quarter, a slight increase over the same quarter last year. Profits were up significantly, though this was partially due to the negative financial impact in 2012 from Hurricane Sandy.

Looking forward to 2014, Verizon plans to complete the acquisition of Vodafone's stake in its wireless division. The company appears to be maintaining its dominant leadership position in the wireless market, without taking a significant hit from T-Mobile's unique "uncarrier" strategy that has spurred stronger reactions from Sprint and AT&T.
