Said to save more than 500,000 sheets of paper per week, increase productivity
The Parliament of Kenya is set to follow in the footsteps of its neighbor Uganda and outfit its legislative representatives and staff with iPads to replace traditional (and frequently revised) paperwork, reports the country's Standard Digital News. While the overall cost of around $350,000 is considered high by Kenyan standards, the lawmakers said the expenditure is justified by decreasing paper use and gains in productivity among members.
Currently, the National Assembly and Senate using some half-million sheets of paper per week to print bills, revisions, scheduled and other paperwork, which could be more easily revised and updated using digital formats. A member of the body, MP Gladys Wanga, was quoted at the initial hearing pointing out that searching for a particular bit of paperwork is far more efficiently done on a tablet than by looking through piles of paper.
Each iPad will cost between $640 and $815 depending on the capacity, notes AppleInsider. The former British colony joins with its former parent, which started using iPads in 2012, as well as other countries in Africa.
