Google plans new Android API to collect, share fitness tracker data

API code hints at Google becoming central store for fitness data

Google is working to add some sort of fitness capability to Android in the future, according to leaked data. A new Fitness API will apparently collect data generated from various fitness tracker-related sensors and offer the results to fitness apps, potentially turning Google into a central store for all of the different health hardware and software on the market.

The details picked up by Google Operating System directly names it as "Android Fitness API," with an information box stating it allows users and apps to "view and edit your fitness tracking, health and activities data including reading and writing raw and transformed data." It is not clear if the API will go as far as the CoreMotion API for the iPhone 5s, which allows apps to use data generated by on-device sensors, but dedicated fitness tracking devices are almost certainly going to be covered by the API.

It is not known if Google will include a working version of the API as part of a future Android update, but if it will be included under Google Play Services instead, it could potentially reach more users faster than if it has to be rolled out to devices under a software update.
