Support for iBeacons building slowly
Shopkick has announced a trial of iBeacon installations at 100 American Eagle Outfitter stores, including ones belonging to sibling brand Aerie. The implementation will be the largest deployment of iBeacons at a clothing chain so far, following one of its own at Macy's, which was the inaugural retail use of iBeacons. The technology only began deploying at Apple Stores a couple of weeks later.
At American Eagle, iBeacons will be used to trigger a welcome message when an iPhone enters a store, and push marketing for sales, rewards, and recommendations. At first alerts won't be unique to specific aisles, but Shopkick says it is working on that. People will, however, be able to "tag" clothing outside of stores and receive reminders about them when they arrive.
Demand for iBeacons is building gradually. Another company, inMarket, is installing iBeacons in 200 Safeway and Giant Eagle grocery stores. Major League Baseball is planning to install iBeacons at partner stadiums.
