Windows XP malware countermeasure updates continue through July 2015

updated 06:40 pm EST, Thu January 16, 2014

OS itself will see no more patches in April 2014

Microsoft, which has been trying to end support for its 12-year-old Windows XP for years, had previously announced the Windows XP final end-of-support date of April 8, 2014 -- saying that after this date, Windows XP will no longer be a supported operating system. However, to help organizations complete long-overdue migrations away from the aged OS, Microsoft has admitted that it will continue to provide updates to just anti-malware signatures and the attendant engine for Windows XP users for a further year, until July 14, 2015.

"The anti-malware cessation does not affect the end-of-support date of Windows XP, or the supportability of Windows XP for other Microsoft products, which deliver and apply those signatures," the company said in a press release.

For enterprise customers, this applies to System Center Endpoint Protection, Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection and Windows Intune running on Windows XP. For consumers, this applies to Microsoft Security Essentials.
