Fitness tracker causes rash of complaints over skin reaction

Fitbit is offering refunds to a number of customers suffering from an allergic reaction to one of its devices. A number of users claim to have suffered skin irritation when wearing the Fitbit Force, with separate reports and a large quantity of complaints on the Fitbit forums prompting the company to provide some users with an exchange or their money back.

One Force user by the name of Kevin told the Consumerist that he started using his wrist-based fitness tracker in mid-November, with the irritation becoming apparent towards the end of December. He describes the irritation as a "red blotch under the device where the battery and charging port sits," which grew over time and also appeared when he switched wrists. A nurse diagnosed it as contact dermatitis.

A statement from Fitbit acknowledges the irritation, though stops short of issuing an apology, instead suggesting it to be potentially caused through a number of different factors, including nickel sensitivity or a reaction to bacteria buildup on the band itself. The company offers a complete refund to affected customers, or a trade for a replacement tracker of the customer's choice from the rest of its range, with Fitbit handling the shipping costs and providing a refund for any difference in price.
